What Could Cause Itching, Pain And Irritation Towards The Left Side Of The Throat?
Question: Hello,
Have had an irritated throat on the left hand side. It feels irritated, aches sometimes. When I look back there I see nothing abnormal. My doctor did not see anything either, but yet it still exists. On occasion if aches on the right side too. Any ideas?

I appreciate your concern
It can either be due to an infective process in the throat or due to reflux disease. After examining the throat, throat swab for culture and sensitivity testing should be taken especially if suspicion for an infectious process like pharyngitis is high.
Antibiotics can be started empirically and can be tailored according to the culture results. Decongestants , antihistamines and NSAIDs like ibuprofen and pseudoephedrine can also be advised.
If no focus in the throat is formed then PPIs like lansoprazole can be advised along with prokinetic such as domeperidone for 2 weeks. If no improvement with these medication occurs then a gastroeneterologist can be consulted to assess the need for upper GI endoscopy.
