Posted on Tue, 2 Sep 2014
Question: Hi there,

I am having some pain (dull) in my lower left back and some bruise-like pain in my left lower abdomen (both externally and internally). Could this be just PMS symptoms or could it be something else?

Brief Answer:
PMS is a possibility.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for posting your query.

Back-ache and joint or muscle pain can happen as part of PMS. If you are due for your period and have always had some disturbances prior to the onset of a period, it is very likely.

Yet, it is always advisable to rule out other causes like muscle spasms, infections of the bowel and bladder and the pelvis.

If the symptoms subside spontaneously with the onset of the menstruation, PMS is the diagnosis. Else, the cause must be sought for.

Hope your query has been answered. Please feel free to contact for further clarifications. I will be happy to help.

regards,
Shanti.V.

Thanks! I am expecting my period in about a week - but am also a little worried that these are symptoms of pregnancy instead. However, the only time I could have gotten pregnant is about a week ago - is this too early to see symptoms like this? Is it more likely that they are associated with my coming menstruation?

Brief Answer:
Cramping is possible.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thanks for writing back.

Cramping is possible as the embryo moves along the fallopian tube in very early pregnancy. Back pain is not common and is more likely to be premenstrual.

In the current scenario, if you suspect pregnancy, avoid using ingesting medication and use topical applications instead to relieve the pain. Please wait for your next normal period and go for a home pregnancy test 3-7 days later with a fresh early morning sample of urine, if you miss the period.

Hope I have answered your doubt. Please get back if you need more clarifications. I will be glad to help.

regards,
Shanti.V.
