Brief Answer:
likely muscular

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Pain in that area is often related to the muscles in that region. If the pain travelled/radiated towards the abdomen and into the groin, then a kidney stone would also need to be considered.

Kidney stones cause loin( back area) to groin pain.

Since the pain is not radiating, then it is likely muscular.

It can take 1 to 2 weeks for muscular pain to resolve, rarely 6 weeks if the pain the severe.

the use of the topical pain med is appropriate along with oral anti inflammatory meds (advil or aleve or cataflam).
Rest or reducing aggravating activity is also important.

P.R.I.C.E MM- protect from further injury
R-rest
I-ice therapy
C-compression-this refers to apply a bandage but would not be applicable to the back
E-elevation- also not useful for the back

M-medication such as those mentioned
M- modalities such as physio for severe or long term injuries

I hope this helps , feel free to ask any other questions
