Posted on Thu, 4 Sep 2014
Question: Sharp pain comes and goes in left hand ring finger. Has been happening on and off for months. Very painful, feels like it's the tip of finger but can also radiate through finger.
Did not bruise it, no injury. Cannot see swelling and ring is not tight.

Brief Answer:
nerve compression or tendonitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The pain in the ring finger without a history of injury to the finger is likely to be due to a nerve compression at the level of elbow or cervical spine or inflammation of the tendon- tendonitis.
If the pain does not aggravate on bending the finger and the strength of the grip is normal then tendonitis is not likely.
To find out the nerve related problem, a nerve conduction study and MRI scan of cervical spine will help.
I hope this answers your query.
