Question: A few years ago my father, age 76, was diagnosed with diverticulitis which was successfully treated with an antibiotic. He always had occasional gas and gastrointestinal distress most of which was relieved by removing lactose from his diet. Today after eating a routine meal (turkey sandwich) cramps and diarrhea returned. As an immediate treatment he took two 125 mg Imodium tablets which seem to provide some relief. Until a full diagnosis can be arranged what treatment do you suggest?

Brief Answer:
Please see the detailed answer. below

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Basically, he needs antibiotics as baseline treatment usually a combination of Ciprofloxacin and Metronidazole for which you will need a prescription. So please be advised to follow up with the urgent care.

Meanwhile, drink plenty of water and electrolyte containing drinks like Gatorade. Follow soft diet. BRAT (Banana, Rice, Applesauce, and Toast) diet will be easier on his tummy.

He can also take Buscopan 10 mg thrice daily for loose motion and cramps don't take Imodium it constipates the patient and would cause stagnation of bacteria.

Hope this answers your query
