What Do Cramps, Swelling And Bruising Above The Knee After Running Indicate?

default

Question: About a week ago, I was participating in a 5-K fun run with my grand-daughter (I am a 60 y/o male - 6'1", 190 lb male in good physical condition - I am a recreational cyclist and runner - low weekly mileage of each - I take clopidogrel 75mg and simvastatin 20 mg daily with vitamin supplements), I slowly jogged the route - while my grand-daughter -walked/ran - towards the end of the event, she wanted to "sprint to the finish" - I attempted to run after her (app. 200 yards). I experienced a sharp stabbing - cramping like pain in my left quadriceps - I believe I pulled a muscle - I experienced some swelling and bruising above my knee. I have been taking salsalate, and periodically icing the area (48-72 hrs later - I have used warm water in the shower on the area). I have not experienced what I think are circulatory issues in the lower leg. The swelling has diminished over the last few days. I have had some discomfort in the leg (alleviated with the med), but symptoms appear to be improving. Any concerns that I may have overlooked anything - or - should I have gone to my MD? I am beginning to train for a distance cycling event in about 10 weeks. The cycling seems to go ok - but I notice the left leg (the one described above), is not a full strength yet... Thank you for your time...

Brief Answer:
Continue observation!

Detailed Answer:
HI and thank you so much for this query.

I have reviewed this information fully and all the measures taken by you are correct. There is no reason to get worried about this as no additional medical intervention is necessary at this time. Recovery to full strength would be a gentle process and not instant. Exercise some patience and all will slowly return to normal. As you resume training, go gently so as to avoid any further damages with immediate intense training.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
