What Do Large Hands And Feet In An Infant Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 3 Dec 2014
Question: My grandson is going to be 2 years old in December. I am wondering if there is a genetic or medical problem with him. He is only 21 pounds at this time. As an infant he used to sit and rock back in forth always - anytime he was being held but it seemed to be to the rhythm of whatever music was playing and seemed to be unpurposeful (like an automatic unconscious action). His feet and hands seem larger than they should be for his age and he barely eats - the doctors wanted to view him eating when he was 6 months old or so. He never would eat baby food (which is fine) but still will only eat a few bites of anything at a time. On the other hand it may be that he just wants to go play -- His sister is exactly 1 year younger and is almost the same size. At birth he also had hip problems and wore a brace for 6 months to "tighten the joints". Could he need genetic testing or does this sound like it is something or nothing?

Brief Answer:
less likely a genetic problem, send pictures

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for writing to us.
You had mentioned that your grandson has large hands and feet.
Send us some pictures to help us understand his physique better.
There are few genetic conditions like sotos, gigantism and marfans.
All these syndromes cause more growth and babies tend to weigh more and may be taller than usual.
If he is playful and active dont worry, his eating should improve gradually.

I would suggest you to get him checked for
1. micronutrient deficiencies including iron, which can cause poor appetite.
2. Deworming with albendazole.
3. Trying flavours and varieties of foods to tackle food fads.
4. If his muscle mass is less, give him protein supplements, eggs, chicken and plenty of milk .
5. Eat together as a family. Encourage him to eat on his own.

Wishing good health
