Question : Dear Dr. XXXXXXX

Today I had a CBC and my EOS% was 5.0 percent and was in the lab normal range (0.00-7.0%), but my EOS# was 0.45 and was listed as high (lab normal range is 0.00-0.40). All other Red, White and Platelet counts were normal. I also had a liver function test (everything normal) and a urinalysis (everything normal). Should I be concerned about leukemia? Thank you for your time.

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
Hello and thank you for sending the question.

With your complete blood count, in a situation with a normal white blood cell count, normal hemoglobin and platelet count then it would be extremely unlikely that you have any type of leukemia.

The results of a complete blood count can fluctuate to a mild degree. Occasionally some of the laboratory values will result slightly out of the range of normal. This is the case for you and I would suspect that a repeat blood count in a few weeks might show completely normal results.

Mild elevation of eosinophils does not always reflect leukemia. sometimes allergies or infections can cause a mild increase in eosinophil count. In your case such a very tiny increase in the eosinophil count may not be related to any type of infection, inflammation or allergy.

I would recommend that you consider checking a complete blood count again in 6 to 8 weeks. If there are any progress of changes that you might talk about this with your primary care doctor again I think this is very unlikely to be the case.

Thank you again for sending your question.

sincerely,

Dr. Galamaga
