What Do My CSF Analysis Test Reports Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 6 Apr 2016
Question: In 2009, I was diagnosed with MS. On 12/30/2014, I started seeing a new Neurologist that said he did not think I had MS (or that it was highly unlikely). Prior to my follow up appointment in November of 2015, an MRI was completed and the results showed slight progression. Therefore, a Lumbar Puncture was completed. I see some scary numbers on the CSF results and I am just wondering what these numbers mean. I apologize, but recently being re-diagnosed has sparked so many questions and getting a hold of my neurologist is difficult. Even though my Lymes CSF and blood came back negative, is it possible to still have Lymes disease? My backyard has a lot of ticks and I am avid in the outdoors, so finding ticks attached is not something rare.

Brief Answer:
CSF report is in favor of MS.Needs clinical and MRI correlation.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX,
Thanks for being on healthcaremagic.com.
I am Dr.Ajay Panwar,a neurologist,here to answer your query.

I have gone through your detailed CSF report. It is worth mentioning here that this CSF report is in favor of MS as an etiology, rather than an infectious etiology.

CSF IgG index is raised along with IgG and IgG/Albumin ratio. These are typically seen in MS.CSF protein is slightly raised but glucose and cells are in the normal range. These findings do not support an infectious process, including Lyme.Mild increase in proteins is common in MS.This report does not mention about oligoclonal bands(OCB).If OCB's are detected, that will further support the diagnosis of MS.

I think, this needs a strong clinical and MRI correlation. Please discuss with your neurologist, in light of these CSF findings.CSF study for OCB's is needed.

Hope it helps. If you have any further questions,I shall be glad to have you in follow-up.

Regards
Dr.Ajay Panwar,
