Posted on Tue, 12 Jul 2016
Question: My father (67 YRS) had been diagnosed with LVEF 15% in January 2014. He has since then been taking ursocol SR 450 alongwith other medicines till date. The LVEF has now increased to 30%. Now the cardiologist has suggested to take LFT and discontinue ursocol sr 450 if the results are normal. LFT results are AST - 17, ALT - <10, GGTP -16, ALP - 52, BILIRUBIN TOTAL - 0.73, BILIRUBIN DIRECT-0.17, BILIRUBIN INDIRECT-0.56, TOTAL PROTEIN-7.50, ALBUMIN-4.12 AND A:G RATIO - 1.22.

CAN MY FATHER NOW DISCONTINUE URSOCOL SR 450?

Brief Answer:
Yes he can if you are sure that is what his doctor meant.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
I'm Dr. Shuba Hariprasad and will be answering your query today.

Ursocol is usually given to reduce the cholesterol synthesis in the liver.
- did your father have any gall stone disease? Or any abnormal liver function test values previously?

- did his cardiologist ask to continue or discontinue Ursocol after results came back normal?

The reason I ask is that usually we need to stop this drug if it either cause liver damage (reflected by abnormal liver function tests) or if it is no longer needed.

As all the results are normal, I would assume that he can Continue it, if it was given for reducing cholesterol production in heart disease in the first place.
As, if he didn't need it anymore (for some other illness like gall stones), his doctor could have just stopped it.

Please confirm with his doctor if he meant to stop the medications.
If you are sure, then you can stop it as all his liver function tests are normal.

Hope this helps.
Please let me know if there is anything else I can help you with.

Wish you both good health.
Regards,
Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
