Posted on Fri, 11 Dec 2015
Question: I tested positive for pregnancy five days before missed period on a urine test. When I did the blood test my Bch hormone was 283 which meant 4-5 weeks pregnant. Well I had sex unprotected on oct 30th I did the blood test nov 14th how could I be 4/5 weeks? Are the levels so high because of multiples ?

Brief Answer:
This is normal for single pregnancy

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thanks for your query.

I have read you query and I understand your concerns about beta hCG levels.

Following is my reply:

1) Your Serum beta hCG levels suggest pregnancy between 4 to 5 weeks.

2) These levels are not high significantly as to suggest twin pregnancy.

3) This is likely to be singleton pregnancy.

4) Start folic acid tablets and get a transvaginal ultrasound scan done after one week to confirm the gestational sac.

I hope I answered you query and addressed your concerns.

Let me know if you wish to ask any further questions. I will be glad to help you.

Regards,
Dr. Soumya

How am I 4-5 weeks pregnant if my lmp was from oct 20-24 and I had unprotected sex on oct 30th? The HcG levels said 283 on nov 14? I'm confused 4-5 weeks seems too long

Brief Answer:
This is normal

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

If your LMP was Oct 20, and had sex on Oct 30 to get pregnant, you have ovulated bit early ( 11th day) and hence pregnancy is advanced by about 4 to 5 days.

This is fine and nothing to worry about.
