What Do My Blood Test Results Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 20 Apr 2016
Question: Hi--I'm trying to understand my recent blood tests. I have diverticulitis but have been feeling rather poor prior to a recent acute attack. the following are my recent blood labs:
C Reactive Protein: .77
ANA Screen IFA: Negative
Sed Rate Modified: 45--which I read is high
My doctor does not seem concerned with the above; the Sed rate probably elevated due to recent infection.
do these results tell me other than I have inflammation in my body? How else to interpret?
thank you

Brief Answer:
No autoimmune disease and no acute infection

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.
Read your history and understood your concerns.
Noted that you have diverticulitis and have been feeling poor prior to a recent acute reaction.

C Reactive Protein: .77
Normal values are up to 10 hence this is within normal limits (0.77- I suppose)
These are produced by liver in response to inflammatory process anywhere in the body.

ANA Screen IFA: Negative
ANA means anti-nuclear antibodies. This indicates that the body has started producing antibodies against its own tissues which it feels are not its own.
This too is negative meaning there is no auto-immune disorder.

Sed Rate Modified: 45--which I read is high
ESR is calculated as Red (erythrocyte) blood sedimentation at the end of an hour. This is one investigations that increases in any chronic disease or disorder. It has most important function as a ''prognostic value'' meaning its reduction on serial examination indicates that the treatment is fruitful and under right direction.
Not to be taken seriously.

I hope this answers your query, please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.

Thank you so much for the explanation.

My family has a history of cancer (ovarian, breast, leukemia (therapy induced) and multiple myeloma). I want to be sure that I understand all aspects of the blood tests. If you feel that the CBC and other panels would not be enough, please let me know if there are other tests that should be run.

Brief Answer:
Physical evaluation and tumor markers.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your appreciation.

Since you have a family history of cancer of ovary, breast, therapy induced leukemia and multiple myeloma, I would advise specific clinical evaluation by your Doctors as this also plays most important part in ruling out the things under consideration.
Clinical examination of the breasts, axillae, cervical lymph nodes, per-vaginal examination by a Gynecologist, Pap smear.
Tests like ultrasonography of the breasts and related structures, of the whole abdomen and trans-vaginal route help a lot.
The tumor markers related to the cancers can be had if you ask your Doctors / lab.The Cancer Screen and Tumor Marker Panel for Female includes the following tests:
Complete Blood Count (CBC)
Chemistry Panel (16 essential tests)
Alpha‐Fetoprotein
Beta‐2‐Microglobulin
Amylase
Neuron‐Specific Enolase
Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA)
CA 125
CA 15‐3
Alkaline phosphatase.
And as may be asked by your Doctors.

This would help you to be certain.

I hope this answers your query.
