Question : How serious is this sinus problem? We could not understand what the doctor was saying when we had an appointment. Could you please transcribe this into basic terminology?

Brief Answer:
There is mild infection of air filled cavities around the nose

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing in to us.

There is mild infection in the para nasal air sinuses.

Para nasal air sinuses are air filled cavities in the bones of the face around the nose area.

In your case there is mild infection of the sinuses and this needs to be treated with antibiotics which your doctor has prescribed. On the right side of the nose, there is the right maxillary sinus and it shows complete opacification due to mucosal thickening and therefore highlighted in your report. The other sinuses are less involved.

It is not a serious condition at the moment but might take a week or 15 days to treat.

Brief Answer:
Probably the doctor wants to do FESS surgery

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

I guess the doctor wants to proceed with a FESS surgery which is a functional endoscopic sinus surgery and is a minimally invasive procedure to visualise the insides of the sinus cavities and examine in detail.

Regards,

Brief Answer:
There are few conditions in which surgery is needed

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for writing back with an update.

Some of the conditions in which surgery is necessary are the following
Chronic sinusitis not responding to medical treatment.
Recurrent sinusitis.
Sinonasal polyposis
Mucoceles in the sinuses.

I guess that her doctor has the above conditions in mind and therefore offering surgery as a definitive treatment.

You might like to discuss with her doctor the reasons why a surgery is being given as a choice for treatment.

Regards
