What Do My Lab Test Reports Indicate?

Posted on Tue, 16 Aug 2016
Question: Greetings. I am uploading my wife's recent lower extremity and EKG reports. Her physician recommended a blood test because of some thickening of the vessels in the legs. But could evaluate the two pages, especially regarding the mild to moderate regurgitation, mild thickenings, etc. in terms of what these mean for her health. It remains unclear to us. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Echo n LL doppler shows age related degenerative atherosclerosis changes

Detailed Answer:
Hello ,
I am Dr. Mody and I would be addressing your concern.
You have uploaded 2 scans -

1) It's lower limb doppler- which is a sonography of the arteries supplying the lower limbs - This report suggested that there is some atherosclerosis plaques ( cholesterol ) deposition in the wall of the lower limb vessels . They are not significant and does not impair the blood supply to lower limb .

The blood tests suggested should be carried and based on the result some medications can be started which can prevents the plaques to be converted to blockages like th3 .

2) The echo cardiography report is a songraphy of your heart - in most probability there is age related degenerative of the valve of your hearts , and because of this degenerative changes there is some leak .

There are 4 valves and there is leak in all of them . Of all the mitral , tricuspid and pulmonary leak is not significant clinically and rather have remained static since your last check. The aortic leak has slightly increased and should be closely followed up by doing a echocardiography every 2 -3 years depending on the hospital protocol there .

Otherwise the pumping of the heart muscle is normal and there is no damage.
Hoping I could help

Thank you Dr. Mody. Is it likely the aortic leak will worsen over the years requiring repair surgery?! And does extra Vitamin C and D and magnesium benefit the thickening? My wife's cholesterol numbers hsve always been satisfactory. Is it likely that the other regurgitations could also worsen over time? Thanks.

Brief Answer:
It's a slow process over 1 or 2 decade .

Detailed Answer:
Hello ,

Progression of aortic leak varies among different people, no objective quantification is done in the report you have upload mostly because it's not clinically significant yet . It's progression generally it's a slow process and would proceed to severe over the period to 10 - 15 years on average . Even then it's well tolerated and may not require an operation. However if there are symptoms, a re-evaluation is justified . Also echo every 2 years at least should be done .

The supplement you have described has no scientific evidence backing it's use in delaying progression however individual studies have proven some role . Also they don't harm and can be taken as a matter or personal choice .

The other leaks are more or less physiological .

Let me know if any clarification is needed and I would be happy to help.
