What Do My Lab Test Reports Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 31 Jul 2017
Question: I had a CT Scan a year ago that showed I had a mildly enlarged spleen and a enlarged liver. 6 months later I had a Ultrasound and a Nuclear Liver and Spleen Scan. The Ultra sound and Nuclear liver and spleen scan showed my liver was normal at 17 cm and my spleen was barely enlarged at 12.9 CM. All My blood work has been normal as well. I saw a hematologist and he ran a bunch of test as well and said they are all normal I have nothing to worry about. My last appointment with him was 2 months ago. My Gastro ordered 1 more CT scan to verify and it was also the same as my other scans showing the liver at 17cm (Normal) and 12.9 CM on the spleen. However what was different on the CT scan that the other scans did not say is that I have a small Accessory spleen seen along the inferior medial margin of the spleen. My question is why did this not pick up on the other scans and is this something I should investigate further?
Thanks

Brief Answer:
No need to investigate further

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.

Now that you have got two CT scans over a year and ultrasound and nuclear scans in between, I don't recommend any further testing.

All the scans point toward a benign process so very unlikely that further testing would yield anything. A small accesory spleen is not easy to pick up and may be missed on several scans. As a reaction to infection, sometimes they can enlarge a bit. Nothing to worry regarding that.

Hope this helps.
I will be available for further follow up.

Regards
