Question: Im here again. Have had back pain for 10+ years. Nsaids tore my stomach up so i take tylenol daily(1000mg) daily and have since back issues started.
Anyway, Im 41, back was hurting again but some on the sides this time as opposed to alng spine and lower back.
Saw dr and he said muscle pain.
I listened and It went away but came back a month later so i went back and asked about kidneys. He said wasnt concerned that it was kidneys but i demanded bloodwork and he finally agreed.
On follow up he said all labs were normal and if i had sharp pains like stones he'd order a ultra sound.
I got the labs sent to me should i need them and just recieved them.
here they are below.
Creatine 1.1
BUN 12
BUN/ creatine 12:1
GFR normal.

Does this look normal and do you agree?
Thanks

Brief Answer:
Get ultrasound and xray done to be sure

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXX,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Low back pain most commonly occurs due to muscular causes in young and middle age and second possibility is herniated disc.
The disc disease is usually associated with radiation of pain to lower limbs and some sensory abnormalities too.
Localized back pain is mostly muscular.
Your concerns about renal pain can not be ruled out completely on basis of blood reports.
You better get an ultrasound and x ray KUB region for assurity.
Is there any history of blood in urine, passing stone in urine, any severe colicky abdominal pain.
Till then you can continue physiotherapy and pain modulator drugs like pregabalin or amitryptiline.
Local pain reliever ointment like diclofenac may also be applied.
All other mentioned reports are normal.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
Do get back to me for further queries.

He said with my labs showed that my kidneys are functioning fine, which i cant interpret beyond the paperwork all says WNL.
He said pain isnt indicative of stones and lab work rules out infection.
Urinalysis was normal as well.
What do you think

Brief Answer:
Not likely to be kidney disease

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
All reports related to kidney are normal till now.

Other investigation as mentioned earlier like xray and ultrasound could be done.
Low back treatment requires physiotherapy and pain modulator drugs.
Nothing related to kidneys till now.

Hope you recover early.
Wishing you good health.

The pain is more like soreness along spine, kind of on ribs on mainly back right side. It feels somewhat consistant with my longstanding back pain in that it doesnt fluctuate is sore to touch when moderate pressure is applied. Muscular stress of the back( driving long distances, multiple bending or walking during work, etc...) is the only thing that increases pain sometimes but only mildly. Seems mainly noticable upon waking and as active.
I think this preoccupation with kidneys came from a scare tactic from a doctor i switched to during insurance transition. He didnt want me to take anything perscribed. Fought writing scripts for PPI. I know no meds is ideal but not realistic all the time.
He told me everything perscription i took would burn up my kidneys( he was fine with OTC).
My new doctor is pretty balanced and just says to take what i have to and not what i dont.
He said the other info had no supportive data and he was likely trying to meet HMO incintive but taking things a bit to far.
Think new doc is actually trying to save me money but im so OCD about my health at this point its hard to make sense of whats valid and whats extreme.
He said my kidney labs were totally fine, better than his and unless i had a mass or something, it was muscular pain. He said because the fact that pain moved to different sides of my body even made that very unlikely and told me its very very indicative of muscle pain along spine and back.
I did have several xray which showed my spine stuff but everything else looked normal

Brief Answer:
Seems to be muscular pain only

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Your doctor is right and in view of normal blood reports and xray it seems not to be of serious concerns.
Muscular back pain reliefs by physiotherapy and pain modulator drugs like pregabalin or amitryptiline.
You should consult your physician regarding this too.
Wishing you good health.

So do you think the doctor i mentioned telling me
"ill burn up my kidneys" was a bit misleading?
I know that no medicine would be ideal but after taking nsads when i first hurt my back, i totally ripped up my stomach and its never recovered in my opinion. Ive had like 7-8 endoscopies. They are usually normal or mild inflamation is noticed. No barrets or anything other than mild gastritis. Gastro advised me to stay on PPI.
I do and manage it.
She also said tylenol or norco was safest, though she warned me about narcotic dependency.
I try to stay on tylenol and use a narcotic as needed.
Regardless of which i use im aware of the acetaminophen in both and never exceed 1000 mg per day. Ive done physical therapy many times with moderate success. I do notice a conection between "life stress" and flare up of symptoms in both back and stomach(not neccisarily at same time though).
I learned quite a while back that ultimatly im responsible for my health so i try to stay educated and informed. Thanks for your help and advice

Brief Answer:
Continue treatment and add pain modulator

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
It's true that overuse of pain killers have effect on both stomach and kidney and sometimes doctor warns before hand to avoid such a situation in his patients.
The management of back pain involves physiotherapy, pain modulator medication like pregabalin or amitryptiline or gabapentin.
If no Imaging of spine is done then get it done for possibility of disc prolapse.
Hope you found the answer helpful.
