Question: I received a test result that I have slightly elevated blood sugar. I weigh 125 ponds at 5' 2" , eat healthy and exercise 6 days a week. I am a 62 year old woman with no family history of diabetes. What is possibly causing this and what should I do to follow up?

Brief Answer:
Pre Diabetes

Detailed Answer:
Ideally you should undergo a Glucose Tolerance test to confirm the presence of diabetes versus pre diabetes.

It involves fasting overnight followed by a glucose drink in the morning after which a blood sample is drawn again 2 hours later.

Alternatively a simple blood test called HbA1c will also give a fair idea regarding he same question. Fasting is not required in the case of this test and it can be done at any time of the day

When I see someone like you in my practice, I typically order the following blood tests in addition to a detailed physical examination:

CBC (Complete Blood Count, also known as Hemogram; includes Hemoglobin, WBC and Platelet counts)
Electrolytes (Sodium and Potassium in particular)
Calcium
Liver function tests (SGOT , SGPT, Albumin, Bilirubin, Alkaline Phosphatase)
Kidney function tests (BUN, Creatinine)
TSH
25 hydroxy Vitamin D
