Posted on Thu, 28 Apr 2016
Question: I am 35 weeks pregnant and had ultrasound today. dr said i had too much amniotic fluid, the femur was short and head too big. I had prenatal genetic testing and am carrier of fragile x chromosone. Do this indicators verify an abnormal baby? Thank you

Brief Answer:
Can be an abnormal baby.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
A too big head and a short femur - if the variation is more than 10 percentile the normal range then it is suggestive of an abnormal baby. The structure of brain and any ventricular dilatation also needs to be ruled out. It is best to go for a follow up scan after 2 weeks and see if there is any improvement.
Please feel free to discuss further. I will be glad to answer the follow up queries that you have.
Wishing you good health.

I'm not sure what the 43% meant or what is was about.

Brief Answer:
The chances of abnormal baby are 5-7%.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
A 43 percentile large head of the baby can be associated with an abnormal baby in 5-7% cases. Out of 100 babies, a reading of forty three percent (this is the percentile value) indicates that the baby is larger than fifty seven other babies and smaller than forty three other babies. The mean or average is fifty percent. A value that reads below 50% indicates that the measurement is more worrisome than the average.
Hope my answer is helpful.

Brief Answer:
Chances are low but get the screening tests done.

Detailed Answer:
If you are a carrier of fragile X and your husband is healthy then the chances of having an abnormal baby are 5-7%. But it is best to consult your gynecologist and get proper tests done to rule out any such abnormality.
