What Do Presence Of Granular Casts In Urinalysis Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 19 Mar 2015
Question: I looked up my health record online from a previous UTI urinalysis I had done because I had never heard back from my doctor. Just that they ordered me medicine. When I looked it said that I has "abnormal granular casts" and I asked my mom who previously was a nurse and she stated that it could be a kidney disease. But wasn't sure. Can you elaborate if it's just because of the uti of if I need to follow up with my doctor?

Brief Answer:
detailed below.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query.

It is true that the presence of granular casts in urinalysis is seen in kidney disease.
Granular casts most commonly represent disintegrated
epithelial cells, leukocytes, or protein. In some cases ,they can be found in urine after a strenuous physical activity.
This finding usually is evaluated in relation to other findings in urinalysis, in clinical presentation, kidney function tests etc.

If all other findings are normal ,the presence of granular casts is not of concern. It is usually associated with states of dehydration and can be present in healthy individuals.

I would suggest to repeat urinalysis ,just to be on the safe side.

Hope this helps to clarify your doubts.
