What Do Red Patchy Skin On Arms And Upper Chest Area Suggest?

default
Posted on Mon, 27 Jun 2016
Question: For a dermatologist please: I'm a 59 year old woman. I've had bright red patchy skin on my arms and upper chest for 2 weeks and now small pink bumps on my chest and breasts that itch if I touch them. They fade somewhat overnight. I've had 4 months of pretty high stress following a bout of Shingles down my right arm in February. Also, new moles are appearing often in the past year. I live in So Cal, so there's more sun. Is this stress or aging skin or something I should have checked? Thank you.

Brief Answer:
light induced eruption; strict sun protection and topical steroid cream

Hello. Thank you for writing to us

i am dr.kakkar(dermatologist). I have gone through your query and i have noted your concern. I have reviewed the images

I can see bright red rash and scattered bumps in the images.

It is a light induced eruption. The distribution of the rash on outer arms, front and V of neck and upper chest are all maximally sun exposed skin.

I suggest that you judiciously use a broad spectrum sunscreen, throughout the day on all sun exposed skin. Reapply very 2-3 hours.

For the rash you may use a topical moderately potent steroid cream e.g either triamcinolone acetonide 0.1% Or mometasone furoate 0.1% cream at night.

Also you may take a tablet of cetrizine 10mg once daily in evening for symptomatic relief from itching.

Regards
