Question : I hear what sounds like squeezing a wet sponge when I turn my head. The sound appears to come from the base on the skull/top of my neck. There is no pain and it does not happen all the time.

Brief Answer:
It could be due to movement of the joint.

Detailed Answer:
Hi
As per your description, the sound could be due to movement at the joint.
As there is no pain,no further investigation is needed.
X ray of the Neck may not give accurate diagnosis. MRI of the cervical spine will give a clue.
If you want to know the exact situation, you should consult your doctor and get an MRI scan of the Cervical spine.
Nothing to worry.
Hope I answered your query.
Wish you good health
