Question: Hello Doctor .. I m eight month pregnant from 30 weeks of pregnancy my BP is around 130/90 .
My gynecologist advised me to go for FASTING PLASMA GLUCOSE (FPG) and POST LUNCH PLASMA GLUCOSE (PLPG) test for continuous three days those reports are as follows :
DAY I - FPG = 93mg/dl and PLPG = 190 mg/dl
DAY II - FPG = 102 mg/dl and PLPG = 139 mg/dl
DAY III - FPG = 118 mg/dl and PLPG = 175 mg/dl

My questions are :

This much change in all three reports what does it indicates ? Does this limits r very high?
It is risky for me and my baby ?
What treatment shud i need now ? Diet or Insulin or any other medication ?
Do this known as gestational diabetics ? what other side effects it has ?

Brief Answer:
gestational diabetes mellitus

Detailed Answer:
Hi dear,
I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.
Fluctuations in the blood sugar levels are due to the different food items taken and the timing of sampling.
The values are definitely high, both fasting and post meals.Fasting blood sugar levels should be less than 93 mg/dl, while 2 hrs post meals blood sugar levels should be less than120 mg/dl.
The blood sugar levels are consistent of gestational diabetes mellitus.
At this stage, diet changes are advised and should be followed for 2 weeks.
Repeat fasting and post meal blood sugar levels are to be done after2 weeks.
If uncontrolled on diet, then she should be started on insulin.
Gestational diabetes mellitus can lead to increased fluid around the fetus, increased size of the baby or sudden intrauterine death of fetus, if the condition is uncontrolled.
I will suggest her to consult her OBGYN specialist as soon as possible so that further management can be done.
