What Do These PFT Values Indicate?

Question: Hello doctor,
Good Afternoon!

This is regarding my brother in law aged-37 years, He has volunteered to donate one of his kidneys to his sister (My wife). While doing the series of tests we found PFT values as

FVC-69%, FEV1- 73%, PEFR-70%, PEFR25-75 - 100%, FEF25% -79%, FEF50% -110%, FEF75% -115%, FEV1/FVC -112%, SVC- 69%, MVVt -15.38 Sec.

Please advise if we can go ahead with kidney donation safely with these values ?

Also whom should we show this report to cardiologist or pulmanologist ?

Hello doc...he has healthy heart as per cardiologist. He checked his ECG, ECHO, chest x-Ray PA view and checked Blood Pressure at couple of occasions. BP is usually 110 /70. He feels no breathlessness even while climbing up the stairs or walking up the road....thx

PFT shows mild restriction, it is not a contraindication for kidney donati

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX

The PFT values show mild restriction in case of your brother in law. There can be many causes for mild restrictive defect in PFT including a inadequate effort while performing PFT. Inadequate effort means not able to blow out forcefully and rapidly. Since he does not have any symptoms pertaining to chest, it`s most likely inadequate effort while performing PFT. Hence in my opinion he can safely go ahead with kidney donation to his sister.

For PFT analysis you have to consult a pulmonologist.
