Question : Hi, My wife underwent a pericardial centesis on 12/27/2016. The surgeon's procedure resulted in about 700 cc having been drained from the pericardial sac, and she was discharged from the hospital in 24 hours The fluid was later tested and no problems in the fluid were found. Prior to her surgery, she had a blood test for pre admission on 12/232016. The results of the blood test were good and her ALP was 134, and her ALT was 30. On 02/15/2017, she had another blood test. That blood test showed that her ALP was 231, and her ALT was 65. This dramatic increase of both ALP and ALT suggest that the drugs used in the hospital caused the spike. What do you think? Should we be concerned?
Brief Answer:
Nothing to worry about.
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query,
I am Dr Rishu saxena and will be answering your query,
As per your queries i would like to inform you that most of the medicines are metabolised by liver. After pericardiocentesis she must be given strong antibiotics and anti inflammatory etc,Elevation of liver enzymes was due to those drugs only. These medicines release toxins which increase oxidative stress on liver causing increased levels of liver enzymes.
But i don't think you need to be concerned about that as your patient is asymptomatic and taking anti oxidants.
Just repeat a Liver function test now and follow up with reports.
Nothing to worry about.
