Question: I have had low TSH for about 10 years. My most recent test showed .08, but my free T4 and T3 levels are within the normal range and always have been. My most recent free T4 test showed 1.02 and free T3 was 2.9. I have goiters in my thyroid and radioactive uptake shows they are active hot spots. My endocrinologist believes the hot spots are causing the rest of the thyroid to be suppressed and causing the TSH to be suppressed. Last year, I was having typical symptoms such as heart palpitations, dry skin, fatigue, etc., but since I was going through menopause, he thought that might be causing the symptoms. This year, I followed up with him again (now fully through menopause) and he believes my symptoms are being caused by my thyroid. As a result, he is suggesting I have surgery to remove my thyroid. Since this is life changing, I want to be sure I am making the right decision and not ruling out anything else that could be suppressing the TSH. I am looking for a second opinion on whether surgery is the right option for me.
