What Do These Followup Blood Test Results Indicate?

default
Posted on Mon, 6 Jul 2015
Question: Hi, I know this site is not for diagnosis, but informational purposes only. But while I wait for my doc to get the 2nd round/followup testing done, I have only been able to find "bad things" in relation to platelets at the level of 600 (or 600,000 as some interpret). So I was curious what possibilities might fall into the category of these blood results. I have a very slight iron deficiency (forgot the iron levels), but my other tests are: RBC--4.59; WBC--5.6; HGB--10.0; HCT--32.3; MCV--70.4; MCH--21.8; MCHC--30.0; PLT--605; RDWCV--17.3. All of these values have been trending to their current levels (the "low" levels--HGB,etc-- have become gradually low, while the "high" levels--platelets,etc--have gradually become high). Any insight or things that it could be that would ease my mind? Thanks in advance. :)

Brief Answer:
Your findings suggest iron deficiency anemia and incresed platelet count.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

Your findings suggest iron deficiency anemia and incresed platelet count.
I suggest to take iron supplementation and iron rich food.
You can take iron and zinc combination tablet once daily. You can take one glass of lemon water/citrus fruits along with it.Vitamin C helps in better absorption of iron.
You can also take one folic acid tablet daily.

You should also take iron rich food like jaggery, dates, green leafy vegetables etc.If you are non-vegetarian then you can take liver also.
You can also take one vitamin B complex capsule daily.

Increased platelet count may be related to anemia. This is called as reactive thrombocytosis. It is expected to recover with anemia correction.
Some patient may have few symptoms related to high platelet count. This need clinical evaluation by a clinician.

You may need follow up tests.
Findings are not serious. This is a manageable condition.

Thank you for your answers. As for the anemia, they did put me on OTC iron supplements just before these last blood tests but said that my anemia was barely worth worrying about. Which is what caught my attention. I know that anemia can increase platelets, but I thought it might only "barely" affect the platelets if it was a very mild anemia. I guess that's why I didn't know anemia could do that, after hearing of people with lower platelet levels having worrisome issues. So is that a typical platelet level that happens with mild anemia?
Thanks so much.

Brief Answer:
Reactionary response varies with person.

Detailed Answer:
Hello

You are right that we don't expect this much increase in platelet count compared to your anemia level, but reactionary response varies with person.
There are many other causes of increased platelet level but anemia is likely reason in your case.
Don't worry. You may go for repeat test after four weeks.
