Question : I have recently had unprotected sex. I have had urethritis symptoms commencing today, 5 days later. I am going on vacation tomorrow, for one week. Is it wise to leave examination until I come home?

Is flucloxacillin a suitable treatment?

Brief Answer:
Can go for vacation, watch the symptoms if aggravating as following...

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I am sorry for the situation you are in.

1. You are saying to have urethritis symptoms after 5 days of having unprotected sex. Can you please give in details your actual symptoms:
- discharge : color, smell?
- pain?
- burning sensation during urination?

2. As you have a recent history of unprotected sex with signs of urethritis, if I was your caring doctor would go deeper with investigations to exclude STDs.

3. With regards to flucloxacillin, it is a beta-lactam penicillin fighting more infections caused by Gram-positive bacteria. In your case, we do not know what is causing the infection. So, if I was your caring doctor would advise to start treatment with a broad spectrum penicillin (e.g. ampicillin/sulbactam) or azythromycin. However, in either cases, you need a prescription.

4. You want to go on vacation tomorrow for a week. The only problem is regarding your actual urethritis symptoms: they might be aggravating if you do not start an appropriate treatment.
There are no other serious issues.

For the moment, I advise to:
- increase water intake
- keep a good local (genital) hygiene
- avoid having unprotected sex
- take anti-inflammatory medications you find over the counter
- take herbal supplements for urethritis and urinary tract infections (UTI) like uva-ursi, cranberry, etc.
- you can start a therapy with flucloxacillin if you cannot go to your doctor and/or cannot start another prescription medicines.

Wish fast recovery and have a nice vacation!
