Brief Answer: GFR is the % kidney function Detailed Answer: Hi, At 17% kidney function means GFR of 17ml/minute Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is calculated from serum creatinine by the formula - GFR= [140-age(in years)]x body wt ( in KG) / Serum creatinine ( in mg/dl) x 72 So by putting the lab report of serum creatinine in mg/dl and your age and wt you can approximate the % of kidney function. Now if you have kidney fuction of 17% you are like ly to loose 2 to 3 % function every year and over 2 to 3 years your function will be below 10% where we advice for dialysis or transplant. But this rate of deterioration can vary and depends on the type of kidney disease . Blood pressure control. and medication under guidance of a nephrologist. By regular treatment this time can increase to many years. But no one can accurately predict that. Only answer is regular follow up with nephrologist. Best wishes.
