Question : Good Morning, I recently had a cat scan in my lower pelvic reagion because of abdominal pain and ever changing stool, some times it is black, beige, etc. I heard back from the GI nurse and she stated that the cat scan showed that I may have a urinary tract infection and possibly cysts and referred me to a Uroligist and have an appointment on July 30th. I am looking to do research to see what it may be any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
please upload the report

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

the reports you may have (CT scan, blood tests, urinalysis or anything else) would be very helpful. Renal cysts or urinary tract infections have nothing to do with your stool. Regarding the infection (?), there something strange about it. The CT scan may indeed reveal findings of infection in the urinary tract, but there should be fever (which you haven't mentioned).

Besides that, a urinary tract infection won't change the stool color or consistency, so it's irrelevant. Black stool (like tar) indicates gastrointestinal bleeding.

I hope you find my comments helpful!

Thank you for your response, Can you please provide me information regarding what a urologist would be looking for with the limited results of "possible urinary tract infection " and Cysts?

Brief Answer:
assessment of the cysts

Detailed Answer:
You're welcome.

The urologist may look for suspicious signs in the cysts. Most cysts are incidental findings and usually the radiologist describes them as "simple cysts" which means that they're just a collection of fluid in the kidney. Most of them are small (up to a few centimeters) and don't cause trouble (like pressure on adjacent structures or obstruction of the urinary flow). These cysts need some surveillance to verify that they won't grow further or develop concerning signs.

Regarding the "infection", I can't provide more information without the actual report. There could be a collection somewhere? Or renal parenchyma abnormalities? I couldn't know without reading the report...

Kind Regards!
