What Does A Blood Glucose Level Of 140 After Food Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 3 Jun 2015
Question: I have always had my glucose level on a bmp as 87 consistantly. THe week before I last tested it was still
87. The next week I went in for chest pain and it turned out to be a hiatal hernia. That night right before the test I drank about 5 cokes to stay awake during finals and ate potato soup along with pop tarts. Do you think I am diabetic when it has never been off or because they took it right after I ate that?

Nobody in my family has diabetis. I normally don't eat like that. Just wanted to stay awake fro finals.

I am sorry I forgot to tell you it was 140 the day I ate like that and was normal for three years before that including the week before

THey told me to follow up with a gastroenterologist for the hernia and that is it. It wasn't even mentioned.

Brief Answer:
You don’t have diabetes!

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you so much for this query.

I am so sorry to hear about the worries you have concerning your blood sugars. Blood sugars of less than 200mg after meals are not diagnostic of diabetes. Also, having normal blood sugars for the past 3years also adds more weight to this. A single value is rarely used to diagnose diabetes as we need to show consistently that this value stays high.

When we talk of diabetes being diagnosed with values greater than 126mg/dl, we refer to persons who are in a fasting state and have eaten nothing for at leafs 8hours. That does’t apply to you and you cannot use this cut off.Yours is random and it is well within the normal range and it is not suggestive of diabetes.

In all, you do not have diabetes. The best way to prevent is healthy diet and regular exercise.

I hope this helps. I wish you well. Thanks for using our services and do feel free to ask for more information and clarifications if need be.
