Question: My daughter noticed a part of her tonsil had detached and was hanging off this morning..This evening that part had completely turned black but still hanging from her tonsil...How serious is this...Should she go to the emergency at the hospital now?

Brief Answer:
Nothing to worry about, but to prevent recurrences better visit ENT :)

Detailed Answer:
Hello sir/ma'am and welcome.

Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query with diligence and would like you to know that I am here to help. No, this is nothing to worry about as I have encountered quite a few patients who present to the ER reporting such a presentation.

This commonly occurs after an individual has a bad case of strep throat, or has recurrent episodes of tonsillitis. The bacteria in such cases causes the death of part of the tonsil, which eventually falls off, and this does not cause any harm.

Another possibility is a tonsil stone, which also falls off, but can recur in the same spot.

In my opinion, whether it is a tonsil stone or dead tonsil tissue following an infection(s), a visit to the ENT (Ear nose throat) doctor would help as he/she can advice on how this can be prevented and appropriately treated.

I hope I have clarified your doubts to a satisfying level. Please feel free to write back to me for any further clarifications, I am always here to help.

Best wishes.
