What Does A Large Abscess On Inner Thigh Indicate?

default
Posted on Sat, 27 Dec 2014
Question: I recently discovered a very large abcess on my inner thigh, it was hard and was noticeable through my clothing. I went to the doctor and will see a surgeon tomorrow. Although the abcess has decreased in size it seems deep and wide, and it feels like I'm forming another one above it. It's pain has decreased, but, I'm still uncomfortable. Even though it's softening why isn't it coming to a head?

Brief Answer:
Specific investigations and treatment.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query. Read it carefully and understood your problem.

How old is the problem- a few days or more than 4 days?
Was it insidious (on its own) or there is any trauma / wound in the leg down?
Do you have fever?

I would advise you the following since you are already visiting a Surgeon tomorrow:
-Get at least ultrasonography and color doppler done, so that the real extent, size, depth, amount of liquefaction, its relation to the major vessels for a safety
in case Surgery is required, Aspiration and sending the sample for gram staining, culture and sensitivity can be done.
-Blood: CBC to see the WBC count, Sugar to rule out diabetes; urea and creatinine and other tests if you have any pre-existing medical disorder.
-Urine: routine test
I hope you are already under antibiotic and anti-inflammatory medicines, probiotics.

Once the reports are there and Surgeon examines you, further care is going to be specific and easy including the type of antibiotic, need for surgical drainage etc. Please follow the advice and you will be fine.

I hope this answer helps you to get a proper diagnosis and treatment.
Wishing you early and complete recovery.
Please feel free to ask for further if you need to and you may rate this answer before closing.

the abcess appeared alone and I have no fever or had any injury. I first noticed it on Friday. it's just painful and increased, in size and I wasn't placed on any antibiotic yet. I've used heat but so then why hasn't it come to a head, you never answered that question. can you bring some more clarity to your answer. I have a history of cysts over the years and have primary sjogens syndrome

Brief Answer:
Heat does not help to get the abscess to a head.

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback.

Heat gives soothing feeling by way of increase circulation and takes away the pain-causing substances hence one feels good. It has no direct bearing on abscess coming to a head.
Applying heat is an age-old practice and continues unabated since ages and there is no difference seen in patient with heat and without heat.

If possible you can upload image of abscess
What sort of cysts and the area where you have?
Sjögren's syndrome: noted your history.

You feedback about tomorrow is most welcome.
