Brief Answer:
Unexplained bruises due to aging skin

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Usually, bruises are caused by very small tears in the blood vessels under the skin due to a trauma. However, these tears resulting in bruises can be unexplained or happen spontaneously. Bleeding problems, especially when accompanied with frequent nosebleeds or bleeding gums, can cause these bruises unrelated to trauma.

In the elderly people, spontaneous bruises can occur due to thinning of the skin and the tissue that supports the underlying blood vessels have become more fragile, leading to microscopic tear and spilling of the blood in the surrounding tissues, i.e. bruises.

Blood thinners are another reason for spontaneous bruises. If you are on this type of medication, please talk to your doctor.

Another reason for these bruises can be actual trauma but the person is not aware or forgets about it.

If you do experience nosebleeds and bleeding gums I recommend you discuss with your doctor and get a referral for a blood test looking for a bleeding disorder.

I hope this answers your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care.
