What Does A Lump On Lower Neck Indicate?

default
Posted on Wed, 11 Feb 2015
Question: I am concerned about my 3 year old Son. 2 months ago I noticed a small hard, non painful lump on his lower neck. Its a little smaller than a pea. It's visible when he moves his neck around. I took him to our Ped who said it looked and felt like a bug bite ( its the middle of the winter where I live) It is not red or itchy. I then waited a month with no change and I just took him to the ENT. He said it is not a lymph node, it's a knot or lump of some sort. He was not overly concerned but said he would recheck in 3 months. I am very worried that its cancer. I started googling and things like neuroblastoma came up and I feel like I need to get this further looked at. He tends to get hoarse and gets a tickle in his through throughout the day. Every since he was 1 his bloodworks has always been a little off with the shape of his cells and such but nothing for the drs to worry about. He does have allergries and they have always said it was from that. Please advise if I need to be more proactive with this.

Brief Answer:
CT scan of neck region

Detailed Answer:
Hi

Since your son is having a non painful lump in his lower neck i would advise you to do a CT scan of neck region.

Since it is not painful and red and he is not having symptoms such as fever i do not think you need to worry and it is not cancer.

If any suspicious lesion is found in the scan them biopsy has to be done to rule out malignancy.

Thank you. What kind of doctor should I take him to for a CT and consult on this? My doctor and the ENT pretty much dismissed me.

Also will the scan tell us what kind of lump it is? The ENT already ruled out that it was not a lymph node, I'm concerned about subjecting my son to the CT radiation so could they just biospy it without getting a CT if they know it's not a lymph node already?

Thank you

Brief Answer:
Radiologist

Detailed Answer:
Hi

You can consult a radiologist for the CT scan.

The scan will tell whether the lump is a lymph node or not.

If the radiologist feels by doing physical examination the CT scan is not necessary then he will do direct biopsy from the lump to rule out malignancy.

If you have no more clarifications then please rate the answer and close the thread.
