What Does A Movable Lump Around The Chin Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 19 Jun 2014
Question: I have recently noticed a large lump on my chin. It can be moved around...but no pain. Occasdionally swells to larger size. Left side of my face is slightly swollen and has developed large scaly areas. With more than usual fine hair growth. My left shoulder has severe arthritis and the entire arm has started to swell. Prominent small blood vessel protrusion on chest and both arms and hands. I have a diagnosis of MS. My hair has gone from light blond to nearly black. Can you help?

Brief Answer:
This is probably an enlarged lymph node.

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear,welcome to HealthcareMagic forum.
I am Dr Aslam here to help you.
You have mentioned about multiple issues.
1)A movable swelling around the chin usually suggests an enlarged lymph node.Occasional increase in size indicates recurrent infection in the drainage area. The usual insult in such cases is a caries tooth, that undergoes recurrent bacterial infection, leading to swelling towards one side of face, and enlargement of the draining lymph node.
If caries is ruled out, other possibilities include submandibular sialadenitis(infection of submandibular salivary glands),or any other soft tissue infection in and around.
Once proper diagnosis is made, this can be treated with antibiotics and anti inflammatory drugs for a few days.other procedures like caries filling/extraction may be needed as the case may necessitate.
You can seek the help of a dental surgeon for correct diagnosis and management. If needed, you may be referred to an ENT/OMFS surgeon.Meanwhile, always keep good oral hygiene.

2)The veins on the chest and arms may be related to the suspected aneurysm.Kindly discuss this with the treating doctor.
3)Your shoulder and arm seems like suffering from a frozen shoulder or Sudeck dystrophy. If simple analgesics for a few days fails to control this,it needs detailed evaluation.A physiotherapist can offer help in this regard.
4)The hair changes,I am not able to comment without a more detailed history and physical inspection.
Hope I have answered your query. If you have further query,I will be happy to help.Thank you.
