default
Posted on Thu, 17 Aug 2017
Question: I noticed a black and blue mark with a small bump on the top of my left hand (near my veins). I do not recall hitting my hand. What could it be? I only noticed it about two hours ago.

Brief Answer:
Possible thrombophlebitis

Detailed Answer:
Hi and welcome.

It would be easier to comment if you please post a photo of it. You can simply upload/attach the picture here to the reports section of this web page.

Considering your description, this may be thrombophlebitis especially if this is tender to touch and painful. Also, it may be thrombosized vein without inflammation.

Second, this may be granuloma after some injury(not necessarily immediate hitting), bite or prick. It would be good to wait for a few days and see if it grows and/ become painful. In this case, you should see doctor since surgical treatment may be required.

Wish you good health. Feel free to ask further.
Regards

Do you have a telephone number where I can text you the photo I took of my hand? I used my I phone and I cannot figure out how to save it to a file on my computer.

I uploaded the photo. Please let me know if you think I should see my doctor.

Thanks.

Brief Answer:
I've reviewed the image

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Yes, it looks like broken subcutaneous vein with hematoma and thrombus.

This is nothing serious. You should just continue to apply ice and Heparin gel, avoid weight lifting for several days and it will pull back.

If this occurs in any other parts of the body it would be good to check your coagulation parameters in the blood since this may sometimes be related to coagulation disorders.

Wish you good health.
Regards
