Question : My 5 month old granddaughter has a soft lump on her back below the shoulder blade. It moves around and she doesn't moan or cry when I touch it. Am concerned about what it could be. Presented itself yesterday.

Brief Answer:
Could be sebaceous cyst or lipoma (benign).

Detailed Answer:
Without being able to feel it myself and see the exact size, color, and location, it is hard to tell, but it may be a sebaceous cyst or a lipoma.

Sebaceous cysts are collections of sebum, an oily material secreted by oil glands that are around hair follicles in the skin, that can get trapped under the skin. They are harmless.

A lipoma is a collection of fatty material. This is also harmless.

However you can take her to her pediatrician so that he or she can see and feel it in person.

If you want, you can download a few pictures of it here and I can try to see if I can tell from the picture, but that usually isn't as accurate as seeing it in person.
