Question : Is an ejection fraction of 9%from a HIDA scan low enough to lead to gall bladder surgery?
Brief Answer:
surgery should be based on clinical picture in addition to HIDA scan
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
The normal EF in a HIDA scan is about 35%. So an EF of 9% is significantly low.
If you have severe postprandial and typical pain of a gall bladder colic, your surgeon might suggest cholecystectomy even if no stone is found on ultrasound examination. Majority of people get relief of pain but not all.
So your surgeon will consider all aspects and then advise on surgery.
HIDA scan should not be the only criteria for surgery.
