Brief Answer:
scarring of kidney cortex

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

The kidney is made up of different parts. The extreme outer layer is the renal capsule, just inside of this capsule is the renal cortex.

Cortical scarring refers to the presence of scars in the cortex of the kidneys (both kidneys since it is bilateral).

There are different potential causes such as: (1) a previous history of infection involving the kidneys
(2)vascular (blood vessel) damage from conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol
(3)inflammatory conditions of the kidney
(4)some autoimmune diseases
(5)use of some nephrotoxic drugs- drugs that can cause kidney damage

Any further steps would depend on the effect on kidney function. This would be determined by blood tests which would check how well the kidneys are working- creatinine and urea levels

These would be increased if the kidney function is impaired.

If there is a significant kidney problems other blood tests would also be affected- potassium, calcium, bicarbonate, hemoglobin

Summary- means scarring of both cortex of both kidneys

Blood tests would determine the affect on kidney function.

I hope this helps, feel free to ask any additional questions

Brief Answer:
treatment depends on cause

Detailed Answer:
HI

Sorry about the delay

Total blood protein is composed of albumin and globulin. Increased in total protein can be related to an increase in one or both of these

There are different potential causes such as: (1)dehydration
(2)some infections
(3)blood conditions such as lymphoma, leukemia, multiple myeloma

To determine the cause your doctor may suggest additional tests such as complete blood count and ESR (this is a marker for inflammation in the body).
These tests would be able to check for the blood conditions mentioned and also for infection.

A test called serum protein electrophoresis may be done. It checks for multiple myeloma.

A urine protein test may also be needed, this would check for the amount and type of protein present in the urine.

The treatment would depend on the cause found in the investigations.
