Brief Answer:
Depends on what you feel

Detailed Answer:
Good evening. My name is Dr. Dariush Saghafi and I am a neurologist in the XXXXXXX OH region. I understand that you are experiencing dizziness and have blood pressure problems. You are on blood pressure medication as well.

Your question is whether or not you should be visiting the ER with the current symptoms of dizziness and a BP of 170/100.

It really depends on a few things as to whether or not you should go to the ER. First, have you tried putting a call in to your own physician or the person who prescribed your blood pressure medication? Secondly, are you experiencing any symptoms of chest pain, pressure, shortness of breath, sweating, radiating of pain, or numbness/tingling going down either arm, or up into your neck?

Is 170/100 a particularly unusual pressure reading for you? How about the dizziness? Do you mean lightheadedness or VERTIGO (i.e. spinning sensation) and is this the very first time you are experiencing this symptom? Do you feel nauseous or has there been vomiting? Any chest heaviness to mention?

Is the BLOOD PRESSURE medication you are on brand new to you (i.e. started within the last few days or couple of weeks?)

If you've answered YES to any of those questions and if you've tried calling your doctor without success then, I think a visit to the ER would be prudent though you may end up being told that it is nothing. The problem is with your symptoms and the pressure being elevated.....AND MY NOT KNOWING VERY MUCH ABOUT YOU other than what you've told me....I do not want to risk your having a complication and being at home with no one to help out.

Good luck to you and if this information was of any value to you I would very much appreciate a feedback note with a STAR RATING so that I can know if I hit the mark with your question or not.

Also, if there are no further questions or commentaries I would also appreciate if you would CLOSE THE QUERY on your end so that the network will credit me for the transaction and archive our discussion for future reference.

All the best to you.

I wasn't sure if by taking the extra blood pressure medication, that it was a good idea. I just needed reassurance. Today I am still feeling a little lightheaded, but somewhat better. I have no other symptoms. No, this is not new bp meds that I am taking. My BP usually runs about 140/80. I take meds for BP, thyroid, depression, and OTC allergy (24 hr). There was a previous time that I had similar symptoms and started taking the allergy meds. and the lightheadedness went away. This time, however, I have already been taking the 24 hr. allergy med. so was afraid to take anything else. I will make an appt. with my Dr. tomorrow. Thanks very much

Glad it all worked out. Please Rate this Consult

Detailed Answer:
I'm happy that you found the reassurance you needed to make your decision last evening. I'm glad you didn't have to spend unnecessary time in the ER.

I think it's an excellent idea to talk to the doctor to make some readjustments to medications as necessary in order to try and avoid both side effects as well as obtaining better continuous control over you blood pressure.

I would very much appreciate a feedback note with a STAR RATING so that I can know if I hit the mark with your questions or not.

And if there are no further questions or commentaries I would appreciate if you'd CLOSE THE QUERY on your end so that the network will credit me for the consult with you and archive our discussion for future reference.

Cheers
