What Does Borderline Kidney Function Mean?

default
Posted on Wed, 6 May 2015
Question: I am a 70 yr old woman, I recently had blood test done, and my kidney function came back borderline. I can't get ahold of anyone at my doctor's office to explain this to me. I am not diabetic.

Brief Answer:
It does not have to be anything serious.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Can you please attach this test result?

Borderline kidney tests should not be the reason to worry. Kidneys function may decrease a little with age. It can also depend of liquids intake, chronic diseases (like hypertension, not only diabetes), urine flow problems (due to stones for example), kidney infections and many more. Cratine, BUN and GFR results are not enough to tell why do you have such result and if you need any treatment.
That is why I suggest you to have urine analysis, urine culture and abdominal ultrasound. You should also have kidney function tests repeated in a week or so to see if they are getting better or not.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.
