Question : Hi, I'm concerned about my sleeping/dreams/waking. I have constantly bizarre dreams. When I wake each morning, I think that I am living in previous homes I have and my room ( have lived here 8 years) feels completely unfamiliar. It takes me a while to feel like I know where/when I am. I'm finding it quite distressing.

Brief Answer:
Increased REM sleep could result in bizarre dreams

Detailed Answer:
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries

I can understand your concern. Excess bizarre dreams or vivid dreams occur in REM (Rapid Eye Movement) cycle of sleep. Normal sleep architecture consists of REM and NREM (Non-REM) sleep. In general most of dreams occur in REM phase of sleep in any individual. So most likely you are having bizarre dreams due to increase in REM sleep. Increased REM sleep and its latency is also one marker for depression. The feelings as if you are living in previous homes and then feeling distress due to this is because of unconscious depression most likely.

Some drugs especially sedatives and hypnotics help to reduce the REM sleep and thus reduce dreams. Benzodiazepines as Clonazepam, Lorazepam etc can prove helpful in your case. These medicines would help to reduce the REM sleep and will result in deep sleep. This will help to decrease incidence of bizarre dreams and you should feel better. I would advise you to visit a Psychiatrist for these problems and for prescription of the drugs. Don't feel distressed about these symptoms you will improve with medicines.

Thanks, hope this helps you. Please don't hesitate to ask again for more doubts.
