What Does Diarrhea With Blood Indicate?

Question: Back in late July I was mildly anemic according to my yearly blood test. My dr ordered a blood occult test. I took his test for three days and I also did an ez detect home test. His test was the fecal smear and the home test was using the tissue in the toilet. I was also to get my bloods redone in a month. During that time they stopped accepting my insurance and I had to find a new dr. The home test came back negative and the retest with my new dr showed no anemia i also had bloods done two weeks ago and everything was good again.

My original dr never called me with the occult test and I forgot about it since my last two bloods were good and the home test was negative, but I was printing off my labs from my old dr and noticed they put the results with my labs and the occult test was positive. I called their office and talked to his nurse she said there was no reason to follow up with a dr since my last two bloods were good and had the negative home test. The week i tested for anemia I had five days of intense dirrhea and stomach cramps, and the following week I did the blood occult test.

This was almost 9 mos ago I have no odd symptoms with my stomach or stool no weight loss, actually gained 10-12 pounds. Is this something I should bring up to my new dr? Or am I overreacting?

Brief Answer:

Nothing to worry.

Detailed Answer:

Hello,

Is that as all your tests are normal and you are gaining weight also I don't think that there is any need to worry at all.

If someone is losing blood in stools regularly then to put on weight is not possible secondly stools would be black and tarry in nature.

Loose stools and cramps etc was due to gastroenteritis which is usually self-limiting and is a separate issue.

Advice-

Keep a watch over stools if they are black and tarry any time then there is need to worry otherwise everything is fine. Please feel free to follow up and just relax.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

So there is no chance I could still be loosing blood? If I was to continue to lose blood for the past nine months I assume it would get worse and I would notice it? My concern is a polyp that would be bleeding slowly, is there any chance of that happening for nine months and it not be visible to me?

Brief Answer:

Follow up answer.

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

Very very less likely. Definitely, yes if someone is even losing 10,l blood daily for 9 months there would be noticeable problems.
Get a repeat stool for occult blood done if its negative there are no chances of bleed. To rule out polyp colonoscopy has to be done.

Hope I have answered your query.

Take care
