default
Posted on Mon, 6 Mar 2017
Question: 1 week ago started on 2 meds. for atril fib/flutter and tracycardia...heart rate went up to 200per min
I don't take anyother meds...healthy otherwise. But i am concerned of the warning on the amiodareone 200mg bid that was prescribed and was checking out other meds .betapace was one.
second med started on was lopressor 25mg bid
having side effects of gas from one of those
having side effects of burning in my urinary meatus...potassium perhaps????
had cryo ablation 3 years ago ..now not working.
I am a nurse and just don't want to damage my kidneys, lungs and all the organs listed as a possibility.
so my question is....what is the best med to take for my condition???betapace does both jobs but is it any safer than the amiodarone and lopressor

Hello!

Welcome and thank you for asking on HCM!

Regarding your concern, I would explain that amiodarone is a good treatment choice to prevent the occurrence of cardiac arrhythmia and atrial fibrillation.

As all other drugs it has some adverse effects. But when deciding to start a drug, we are always based on the fact that the benefits are much more than its adverse effects.

But the dose that you are taking is a high dose. This is usually used as a loading dose in the beginning of therapy and then reduced up to 100-200 mg daily.

Regarding the burning in your urinary meatus, it may be related to an urinary tract infection. I recommend performing an urine analysis.

I would also recommend performing periodically scheduled follow ups with blood lab tests including complete blood count, kidney and liver function tests and blood electrolytes.

Hope to have been helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
