Question: Hi!
My Mantaux test is positive. My ESR is 23 (within limits as per lab report), but my beta HCG has increased (from 448 to 1500) after abortion (which happened on its own after 4 weeks of LMP). My Hb is 8.5. i am still bleeding and its been ten days. What can be the reason for abortion?

Thanks for the query to hcm,
As your beta hcg has increased and doubled after previous levels and still positive, it indicates that the abortion has been incomplete and there is possibly an ongoing pregnancy in situ.
It is suggested that you should get a transvaginal ultrasound to check for retained pregnancy first.
Possibly earlier bleed was a threatened miscarriage and not a complete abortion at all. So ultrasound pelvis is must hence.
