The kidney has two parts as far as its structure is concerned - The cortex and Medulla

Cortical thinning means there is reduction in renal function as you have mentioned

When the margin between cortex and medulla gets obliterated the sonologist will mention loss of renal cortical differentiation

If your Blood Urea and Serum Creatinine are done they would be elevated, early sign of renal[Kidney] failure
