What Does "mildly Thickened Anterior Mitral Valve Leaflet" Mean?

default
Posted on Mon, 7 Jul 2014
Question: I had an echo with all portions normal but the following observation.
Mitral Valve - mildly thickened anterior mitral valve leaflet. Very mild prolapse at the tip of the anterior mitral valve leaflet with a posteriorly directed jet of mildly moderate mitral regurgitation.
Tricuspid Valve: Normally structured tricuspid valve. Mildly moderate tricuspid regurgitation with a dense, triangular-shaped Doppler signal Estimated right ventricular systolic pressure is 26mm HG consistent with a normal pulmonary artery pressure.
Eject rate is 55 and all other functions are normal. Internist ordered the test, but I can't see cardiologist for 2 months. I have not symptoms but this was a follow up to takotsubo in 2012. I have no symptoms; is this test cause for alarm? Thanks

Brief Answer:
You only need follow up examination.

Detailed Answer:
Hello XXXXXXX XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing to HCM

I have gone through your findings in detail.
Though you are suffering from mild valvular heart disease, your ejection fraction is absolutely fine.It is the most important factor to assess functional status of the heart.

The left ventricle is the heart's main pumping chamber, so ejection fraction is usually measured only in the left ventricle (LV).An LV ejection fraction of 55 percent or higher is considered normal.

You don't worry at all.Your right sided heart function is also fine.It is indicated by normal pulmonary artery pressure.

You only need regular check-up.It is good that you are asymptomatic because you have normal ejection fraction.

Get well soon.
Hope I have answered your question.

I understand you cannot be certain, but is this type of diagnosis somewhat general for my age; e.g. how common is this and does it normally not require treatment...or does it? Thanks.

Hello XXXXXXX XXXXXXX
Thanks for writing back

Mild regurgitation is normal with the advancement of age.
You don't need any medicines at present.
Medicines are only advised if patient is having have low ejection fraction and have congestive symptoms like breathlessness, pedal edema etc.
You don't have any symptoms means in spite of mild regurgitation,it is in compensated stage.

Get well soon.
