What Does My ABG Reports Suggest?

default
Posted on Wed, 8 Oct 2014
Question: Hi, I am writing regarding my ABG results. I am concerned...My doctor isn't. I am and have had asthma for over 24 yrs and have had pneumonia over 8 times. I am 54yrs. I also have SLE Lupus. I am on 3 separate asthma medications daily.
Here is what concerns me my...
PO2 Temp corrected was 71..Norm is 80 - 95
O2Saturation was 92..Norm is 95 - 99
PO2 Measured was 71..Norm 95 -100
At one point during my breathing test I became dizzy when breathing out all my air. The tech took 20 mins trying to find my artery and could not find it. Thus, she said we will begin the breathing test and after the test I will have someone else will try to get the blood. The second tech could not locate my artery and tried for over 10 mins and finally reached it. The read on the breathing test results said if my breasts weren't so large I would be able to breath better...pressing on my chest wall...Also due to the fact PT was hyper ventilating the blood gas are null. I find this very offensive. My husband was there with me and said, " Never once did you hyperventilate you were extremely calm even when they could not reach your artery". I am concerned regarding the Blood Gas results...Should I be? My health is not good...I also suffer from a genetic clotting disorder were I am on 12.5 mg of Coumadin per day. I value you response.

Brief Answer:
Reports are near normal.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Jyothi BL and I will be answering your query.

Looking at the reports and query, my opinion is as follows:

1. The normal PO2 is 80-100 mm of Hg and according to some books 75-100 mm of Hg. 71 is just borderline and with your asthmatic history and increased age, it is near normal.

2. Oxygen saturation above 90 is really good and that is the main reason, your doctor is not worried. Under the circumstances, you report is good.

3. Blood gas results are not to be worried. Make sure you are maintaining proper range of INR as you are on coumadin.

Hope it helps.
Any further queries, happy to help again.
