What Does My CT Scan Report Indicate?

default
Posted on Thu, 16 Apr 2015
Question: My daughter had a CT Scan on Friday and there were two findings;
1. Thickening of the bladder wall
2. Swollen lymph nodes around the bladder
We were referred to a pediatric urologist and have an appointment on Tuesday. What do these findings mean?
Thank you

Brief Answer:
Those findings need to be correlated with clinics.

Detailed Answer:
Hi, I have gone through your question and understand your concerns.

In a number of cases in children, thickening of bladder walls with swollen lymph nodes around it, found in imaging studies, may be related to cystitis or urinary bladder infection, ( difficulty and urgency to urinate, pain above bladder, fever).

Thickening of bladder walls due to cystitis is diffuse, i.e. all bladder walls are involved.

These findings need to be correlated to symptoms.

In rare cases more serious illnesses represent with those imaging findings on CT, especially when thickening is not diffuse, or focal.

Urologist visit will determine the correct diagnosis.

Hope this answers your question. If you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

She already was diagnosed with Cystitis two antibiotics ago. The urine test showed white blood cells, protein and blood but when cultured (twice) negative results are found for bacteria.
Please let me know possible alternate findings.
Thanl you

Brief Answer:
There are other causes of cystitis.

Detailed Answer:
Hi again.

Other causes of cystitis, besides bacterial one, include interstitial cystitis ( cause unclear), foreign body cystitis ( renal and bladder stones), chemical cystitis, and in children genitourinary tract abnormalities.

Other tests needed to achieve correct diagnosis ( cystoscopy and maybe biopsy of bladder wall).

Hope I helped. Best regards.
