Question : Hi there- I was hoping you could help interpret the results of my CT scan. I went into the ER this past weekend with what I thought was appendicitis. This was ruled out; however, the comments on the bowel were as follows:

Short segment of wall thickening of the cecum and proximal ascending colon with minimal surrounding pericecal/pericolonic fat stranding. This is centered at the level associated above, but the terminal ileum appears normal. Stomach, small bowel, and remainder of colon is normal. No right-sided colonic diverticula. Normal terminal ileum and appendix.

I have a family history of both Crohn's and intestinal cancer (my mom's father died at 37 from this). Not sure if that's helpful, but thought I would include.

Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for asking!
I read carefully all your concerns and Ct report and I can say as follows:
1.Your Ct findings like wall thickness of carcal region with right abdominal pain may be related with:
- acute bowel infection (viral, bacterial). This is why your doctor has prescribed antibiotics.
- IBD
- bowel cancer ( rarely)
2. If I were your treating doctor I would recommend to do :
-colonoscopy
The fact that you have a family history for both Crohn and bowel cancer strongly suggest you to do colonoscopy.
Hope it was helpful to you!
